Have you included the whole furniture configuration?
Start with the product links or article numbers and the quantity of each item. Include separately chosen doors, drawers, hinges, shelves, rails and organisers. A picture of the finished room does not always identify everything that needs assembling.
For a modular wardrobe, save the final planner design and its item list. Check that these match what you ordered. As a concrete example, IKEA's PAX/FORSAND combination 495.026.65 lists the frame, doors, hinges, rail and shelves as separate components, and currently arrives in nine packages. That is an example of one configuration, not a standard package count for every wardrobe.
Tell me whether you want a new item built, an existing item dismantled, or a partly assembled piece completed. Those are different jobs. My furniture assembly service explains the scope to agree before booking. Colin Home Service is independent of IKEA.
What should you check when the packages arrive?
Compare the delivered labels and quantities with the order, including any separate deliveries. Photograph visible damage and keep the product and order details available. Tell me promptly if something needed for the planned assembly has not arrived.
There is no need to empty every sealed fitting bag in advance. If you have opened the boxes, keep each item's instructions, hardware and panels together; mixing two similar screw packs can create an avoidable problem. Keep loose fittings out of reach of children and pets, and retain packaging needed to identify or return a damaged part.
For an apparently missing IKEA component, IKEA advises checking all the relevant packages, since an item may span several boxes. Identify the missing part from its instructions and use the supplier's replacement route. A missing structural panel or specified fitting needs resolving; a roughly similar screw or improvised piece is not an agreed substitute.
Will it fit during assembly as well as afterwards?
Check three things separately: the finished footprint, the space needed to build it, and the room it needs in use. Measure the intended position, ceiling height and obstructions such as skirting, projecting sockets or sloping ceilings. Allow the doors and drawers to open without hitting a bed, radiator or another unit.
Use the exact model's manual for the assembly method and any clearance needed to lift or turn the frame. A tall item fitting under the ceiling when upright does not prove there is room to raise it from the floor. Equally, do not apply an older model's lifting instructions to a newer frame designed to assemble upright.
For example, the current PAX frame 804.582.07 specifies a minimum ceiling height of 237 cm for upright assembly, or 240 cm when completed with sliding doors. Those figures apply to that listed frame and arrangement; they are not general wardrobe clearances. Check the matching assembly instructions and the instructions for any additional doors or fittings.
Are the route and final room ready?
Tell me where the packages are now and which room the furniture belongs in. Include the floor, stairs or lift, narrow turns and any restriction on bringing long panels through the building. Check package dimensions as well as assembled dimensions; flat-packed does not mean light or easy to carry.
Agree any lifting help before the appointment. The PAX frame example above specifies two people for assembly. I need to know the exact product so handling can be planned; do not assume a customer will be expected to lift a heavy panel or that every item can be built by one person.
Clear a usable working area and remove fragile belongings from the route. Discuss moving existing furniture, floor protection, dismantling an old unit and packaging removal as separate parts of the enquiry. If you cannot move the packages safely, leave them where they are and explain the situation. Mention parking or building access restrictions before the visit.
What needs checking about wall securing?
Find the restraint or anchoring requirements in the furniture instructions before deciding that the final position is suitable. IKEA's Secure it guidance explains the role of wall attachment in reducing tip-over risk and why the wall material matters. A unit appearing steady while empty is not a reason to leave out a required restraint.
Send a wider photo of the proposed wall, including skirting and nearby fittings, and say what you know about its construction. Photos help plan the enquiry but do not establish a concealed fixing's suitability. The furniture, supplied attachment system, supporting wall and safe drilling position need to be considered together.
If skirting holds the furniture away from the wall, send a side-view photo of the gap. Check the product's approved anchoring arrangement before choosing a spacer or modifying the furniture. A gap does not justify leaving out a required restraint.
If you rent or there are building restrictions, confirm the relevant permission for drilling before booking. An unresolved permission or unsuitable mounting position needs a different plan, not omission of the manufacturer's attachment. For a separate wall shelf, see how to plan a shelf and its supports; a furniture restraint is not automatically a suitable shelf fixing.
What if you have already started building it?
Send clear photos of the current stage, the last instruction step completed and the point where something stopped fitting. Mention a reversed panel, damaged hole, missing connector or any glue or replacement hardware already used. Keep unused parts identified by item.

| Current condition | Useful next step |
|---|---|
| Unopened, complete order | Send the configuration, package labels and room details so the assembly can be planned. |
| Partly assembled, no known damage | Show the stage reached and keep the remaining parts with their instructions. Earlier steps may need checking. |
| Damaged panel or connection | Photograph the damage and contact the supplier about the correct replacement before assuming assembly can continue. |
| Used or previously dismantled furniture | Identify the model, available fittings and condition. Establish whether its instructions support reassembly. |
Stop forcing a joint that will not line up. Avoid taking apart an unstable structure just to photograph it; keep people clear and describe the problem. Completing someone else's assembly can involve correcting earlier stages, so the remaining visible steps do not establish the time needed.
What should you send for an assembly quote?
A complete enquiry helps me assess the work before an appointment is agreed. Send these details together:
- Products: links or article numbers, quantities, the final configuration and assembly instructions.
- Delivery: what has arrived, where it is stored, and any missing or damaged items.
- Room: a wider photo of the final position, relevant dimensions and the available working space.
- Access: postcode, floor, stairs or lift, entrance arrangements and any parking restrictions.
- Current condition: whether assembly has started or the furniture has been dismantled before.
- Whole job: required wall securing, extra fittings, moving or removing old furniture, and your priorities.
If you cannot find an IKEA manual, its assembly-help page explains where to find the documents on a current product page and how to ask about discontinued items. Match the article number, not just a similar-looking product name.
My pricing guide gives the current labour rates, minimum charge and materials calculation. The exact configuration and agreed work determine the estimate; there is no single fixed price or duration for every wardrobe. Let me know about a deadline or delivery change so we can discuss availability without assuming the visit can go ahead unchanged.
What should be checked before using the furniture?
Compare the completed item with its instructions: specified parts fitted, required restraint completed, doors and drawers operating as intended, and any remaining issue identified. Keep the instructions and labelled spare parts for later adjustment or a future move.
Follow the manufacturer's loading and care guidance. Do not use an unfinished or unstable item as temporary storage. If a drawer catches or a door sits unevenly, explain the symptom rather than forcing it or adding weight to make the unit feel steadier.
For an existing drawer problem, my drawer troubleshooting guide helps distinguish an obstruction, alignment issue and runner fault. If assembly is part of a larger bedroom refresh, include the other tasks in the original enquiry so their sequence and finishing requirements can be discussed.
