Find the fault before buying the replacement.

A moving handle, an uneven cabinet front and a drawer that will not close can have different causes. Start with a description and safe photos. Showing the whole item as well as the loose part helps us discuss whether the next step is adjustment, a compatible component or a closer assessment.

Kitchen cupboards and drawers

For cabinet repairs, send a view of the fronts closed, the affected fitting and any damaged board. Include the maker or model if known. A repair needs sound material to hold it; an adjustment cannot restore a fixing that has pulled out of crumbling board.

Ordinary internal doors

Say whether the door catches the floor or frame, will not latch, or has a loose handle. Mention new flooring or recent painting. This helps separate the fit of the door from a hardware problem. If an older door or its fittings should be kept, say that before buying replacements or planning any trimming. Fire doors, entrance security doors and unexplained movement need an appropriate specialist assessment.

Flat-pack furniture assembly

For wardrobes, drawers and storage, send the model and full configuration, package status and final position. Include the assembly space, route to the room and required wall securing. Mention an old item to dismantle or a partly built replacement so that work can be assessed separately.

Curtain poles, shelves and mirrors

I can assess fitting products you have already bought. For curtain poles, send the full kit, curtain details and window photos. For shelves and mirrors, include the item weight, intended load and mounting instructions. If an old bracket is loose, show the damaged wall and say whether removal, filling or repainting should be included.

Surface repairs and paint

Explain whether the repair should be left ready for paint or include decorating. Close-up and wider photos show both damage and the finish around it. Recurrent damp, cracking or loose material needs assessment before a cosmetic repair is planned.

A useful repair list.

For example, replace these details with your own:

  • Two kitchen fronts touch when closed; I can show the hinge positions and the whole unit.
  • One bedroom door catches the floor since the flooring changed; it still latches.
  • A redundant shelf has left holes to fill; please discuss a wider repaint as well as a local touch-up.

Add the postcode, access and any deadline. Photos support an initial discussion, but they do not establish the condition of hidden fixings or guarantee that a part is reusable. We will agree the work and price before booking.

Check the address before an alteration.

Kingston identifies The Groves as a conservation area within New Malden and lists individual buildings with separate heritage designations. If you are keeping an original door, handle or other feature, include that in the repair brief. Agree what can be adjusted or replaced and check any necessary consent before work affecting protected features. Being in The Groves does not make every home a listed building or every small repair a consent matter.

New Malden is also a postal place name, so send the full address and postcode rather than relying on the town name to identify the council or parking rules. Check the actual street and proposed visit time, and tell me about any permit, shared entrance or building restriction.

Useful answers before we agree the work and appointment.

What are your handyman rates?

Labour is £50 for the first hour, then £25 per additional 30 minutes, including VAT. The minimum labour charge is £50 including VAT, even if the work takes less than an hour. Materials are charged at their net cost (excluding VAT) plus 10%, then 20% VAT. There is no separate travel or parking charge. Send your job list and postcode so we can discuss the work, materials and total before booking. See how the rates and quote work.

Is New Malden part of your service area?

Yes, New Malden is named in my existing Kingston upon Thames coverage. Send the full address and postcode so I can check the location and discuss the work. Town names and postcode prefixes alone do not establish an appointment or the relevant council rules.

Should I order new cupboard hinges before asking?

Identify the existing hinge and fault first. Send its markings, mounting plate, closed cabinet fronts and damaged material. Hole positions and hinge geometry affect compatibility. A similar-looking replacement may not fit, and an adjustment or repair to the supporting board may be needed instead.

Can a cupboard door be repaired instead of replacing the cabinet?

Sometimes an adjustment or compatible fitting can resolve the problem. If the board around the hinge has failed, its remaining condition matters. Send close and wider photos so we can discuss the options; a repair plate is not suitable for every cabinet or degree of damage.

Does a sticking door always need trimming?

No. The contact point, hinges, latch and recent changes need checking first. An ordinary internal door rubbing after a change of flooring is a different problem from a loose hinge or a door that closes but will not latch. The sticking-door guide explains those distinctions.

Can an older internal door or handle be kept in a home in The Groves?

Tell me which parts you want to retain and show the door, hinges, handle and contact point. A small adjustment may be different from replacing an original fitting or cutting the door, and I cannot decide the repair from its age alone. Check the property's actual heritage status and any required consent before alterations. I can discuss ordinary internal-door repairs; historic restoration, fire doors and entrance security doors need the appropriate specialist.

Should I buy new drawer runners before asking about a repair?

First empty the drawer and send photos of how it sits, the runners and any maker or model label you can see safely. A blocked drawer, uneven front, loose fixing and failed soft-close mechanism need different responses. The drawer troubleshooting guide explains what to check without forcing or dismantling an unfamiliar mechanism.

Can you fit a curtain pole I have already bought for my New Malden home?

Yes, subject to the product, window and supporting wall being suitable. Send the manual, brackets and curtain weight or specification, plus a wider window photo. Supplied fixings may not suit the wall. Include old brackets, damaged holes and the finish you want afterwards; specialist bay tracks need a separate product assessment.
